Statement Against the ‘Doxxing’ of Journalists

November 4, 2023

The Movement Against Disinformation stands in solidarity with the Cagayan de Oro Press Club Inc. (COPC) in light of the recent 'doxxing' incident against its members, Menzie Montes and Vice President for Print, Cong Corrales.

MAD condemns in the strongest terms all forms of abuse of personal and sensitive information of journalists, social activists and other truth-tellers.

MAD firmly denounces the heinous act of 'doxxing' that violates both the Data Privacy Act and the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. Doxxing not only infringes upon the rights of individuals but works to silence independent media and legitimate dissent, which are cornerstones of any democratic society.

MAD calls upon the relevant authorities, including the City Housing and Urban Development Department (CHUDD) of Cagayan de Oro and the City Mayor Rolando Uy. We urge them to take swift action to ensure that such malicious practices are deterred in the future and those enabling them are made accountable under the law.

It is imperative that we create a conducive environment where journalists and members of the press can exercise their crucial role as watchdogs without fear of harassment or intimidation. The media's role in speaking truth to power is essential in fostering transparency, accountability, and the overall health of our democratic institutions.
