Countering Disinformation with Truth and the Rule of Law

MAD is a broad non-partisan coalition of members from the academe, legal profession, civil society groups, international and local non-government organizations and other advocacy groups that are united in pushing back against the systematic and unregulated spread of disinformation on social media platforms, which is viewed as a real and serious threat to democracy, good governance, and human rights.

We are the Movement Against Disinformation (“MAD”), a non-profit organization with the core objective of addressing and combatting through a multi-pronged approach the spread of disinformation on social media platforms.

MAD files strategic litigation against perpetrators of, and enablers of disinformation on social media platforms to exact accountability and uphold the Rule of Law.

Katips x MADPH Block screening

On 12 August 2022, the Movement Against Disinformation (“MAD”) organized a block screening of the multi-awarded film, KATIPS, at Cinema I, Estancia Mall, Ortigas, Pasig City. It was attended by several of MAD’s members and friends, as well as the director and some actors of the film. Not only is the block screening aligned with MAD’s advocacy of countering disinformation with the truth and the rule of law, but it is also a fundraising activity for MAD’s future endeavors.

STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND OF THE PRESS

On 22 August 2022, at the opening of school classes, reports on shortages in classrooms and chairs particularly that of a public high school in Manila, where students were shown in photos to be sitting on the floor due to shortage of chairs, circulated in social media. Education authorities quickly labeled this as “fake news” and the journalist was subjected to attacks and harassments online for making such report. This report was later confirmed as true and accurate by the president of the faculty and employees association of that same school, who affirmed that there were really not enough chairs for all their students.

STATEMENT ON THE ATENEO SHOOTING INCIDENT

MAD sends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the shooting incident at the Ateneo de Manila University.

MAD condemns in the strongest terms the role that disinformation and social media platforms have played in bringing about this lawless violence, and again their part in flattening the discourse on the real issue of violence and impunity that marked this tragedy.

What we do

Strategic Litigation

In line with MAD’s advocacy to push back against disinformation online through legal means, in May 2023, it assisted a journalist in the filing of a case against a social media platform for violation of Data Privacy Act.

On March 5, MAD hosted a special block screening of the movie Oras de Peligro directed by Joel Lamangan. The film depicted a struggling family becoming active participants in the final hours of the uprising.

Fundraising and Special Block Screening Event

On March 11, MAD held part 2 of its Webinar Series on the 10-Point Plan of Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov. It dwelled on the calls addressed to the European Union at the wake of passage of landmark legislation reigning technology platforms.

Emerging Antidotes on the Disinformation Crisis

Patient Zero Awakens:

On January, February, and June 2023, MAD organized convening sessions of advocates against disinformation to map out an action plan moving forward. Various groups and personalities from different sectors attended and graced the event.
